Seven Ideas for Sustainable Self-Care
In January, it’s common to set goals and come up with new resolutions and habits. We’re no strangers to fun new calendars or fitness classes, but we want to make sure you think of your mental health as well. We’ve listed some of our favorite ways to nurture happiness while keeping the planet in mind. Get ready for your most joyous year yet!
1. Take a Hike
Whether you go alone, with a friend, or your favorite furry companion, there’s no better way to clear your mind than by stepping out into nature. You can go at a brisk pace or slow amble, visit somewhere new or stick with an old favorite…you even have different options within your city or a rural area. Choose whatever makes you smile most, and head from there.
2. Create an Outdoor Oasis
Sometimes you just need to sit down and take a breather. Why not designate a special place outside for it? Put together a cozy spot on your porch or patio with potted plants and overstuffed cushions, or install a bench under your favorite tree. Whenever you feel stressed, or want to bring yourself joy, all you have to do is plop down, take in the fresh air, and remind yourself of all the good in your life.
3. Exercise Outside
Most of us probably thinking of running or jogging as the best way to combine nature with our physical pursuits, but the sky is the limit if you get creative! If you love yoga, take your mat outside. Into dance? Why not grab a friend and practice at your favorite park? Who needs gym equipment when you can do situps under the sun? You could also try biking, roller skating, or team sports like tennis or kickball. Go for whatever makes you feel your best!
4. Meditate
This ties into our previous tip about outdoor oases, but goes beyond just taking a break into something a little more intentional. Find that spot that allows you to relax, close your eyes, and spend five minutes or more turning off your brain and connecting to your breath. You can go solo or find guided practices online. You’d be surprised at what doing this daily does for your overall outlook.
5. Channel Your Inner Artist
Now that we’ve given you several ways to take advantage of the benefits of nature, let’s turn to our creative side. Expressing yourself through art can help with depression, anxiety, and stress. It can also be incredibly fun and rewarding. Put a green spin on it by using recycled or upcycled materials.
6. Indulge in Local Bounty
Another great way to make yourself feel awesome? A hearty meal. Support local farmers by concocting something delicious from fruit and vegetables purchased at your local farmer’s market. Not into cooking? Plan a relaxing evening at a local farm-to-table restaurant. You’ll support Mother Earth and the regional economy, and have an excellent time doing it.
7. Treat Yo’Self
It’s fun getting yourself something new, we won’t deny it. The trick is that it only has to be new to you. If you like fashion, piece together a new outfit from a thrift shop or consignment store. If you like reading or music, head to a used book or record store. You can also swap items with a friend, or a whole group of people. It’s the green way to gift yourself!
