How We’re Staying Safe During COVID-19
All over the state, Georgians are beginning to adapt to a new normal in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. As offices close, schools transition to online learning, and we operate in a state of emergency, we want to keep you informed of our own changes. Please read on to discover how we’re adjusting our services in the coming months, and how you can help us keep our state clean, green, and beautiful during this pandemic.
More than anything else, we value the safety of our volunteers, staff, partners, and communities. This week, the KGBF team began teleworking in an effort to practice social distancing. Following guidance from the CDC, Governor Kemp, and Keep America Beautiful, we have also recommended that our network of statewide affiliates postpone all group and volunteer activities, including those related to the Great American Cleanup, through early May. (Keep America Beautiful has extended the end of GAC’s program period to September 20.) As the situation develops and we receive more information, we will continue to update our policies and keep you informed. You can also contact your local affiliate to find out the latest on what’s going on in your specific neighborhood.
Although we recognize that everyone’s situation is unique, we encourage everyone reading this to stay home, avoid groups of more than 10 people, and practice social distancing (staying 6 feet or more apart) as best as your circumstances allow. Remember to wash your hands frequently and vigorously, avoid touching your face, and disinfect surfaces regularly.
If you’d still like to do your part to improve Georgia’s environment, even during these quieter times, we do have a few tips.
Finally tackle those weeds and overgrowth in your yard.
Order seeds online for this year’s garden, or make a list of what you’ll buy from your local market once restrictions lift in your community. Remember to keep native plants that will aid pollinators in mind.
Pick up litter where you can! You don’t need to join a large group to make a difference. Take a walk or run around your neighborhood to get some fresh air, and while you’re at it, remove any debris you see. Just make sure to protect yourself by wearing gloves and bright colors, and wash your hands thoroughly when you get home. You can also join others in your community by signing our pledge to end litter.
If you’ve been waiting for a free moment to clean out your closet, now you have your chance. Set aside tote bags for gently used items like clothing and toys, and once you’re done sorting, store them somewhere out of the way until you can bring them to a donation center.
