How to Be a Sustainable Student

Some of you may have resumed classes recently yourself. Others might be getting back into a routine with children who’ve returned to school. Whatever your situation, it’s that time of year, and we’re here to show you how you can live and learn green.

1. Take Notes Electronically

The world has gone digital, and your studies can too! Notebooks and flash cards can certainly come in handy, but whenever possible, jot down what you need to remember on your laptop or iPad. You’ll save numerous trees, and your wallet will thank you. And trust us…you’ll be more likely to revisit your notes if they’re all in one place anyway.

2. Recycle

You might find yourself in situations in which you’ll have to use paper and pen. When it happens, just remember to recycle what you can once you no longer need it. If your school doesn’t provide any options, see what you can do to get a program started. You may even earn extra credit!

3. Lunch Like You Mean It

It’s easy to be eco-friendly if you plan ahead. Invest in reusable containers, cutlery, and water bottles, and trade in your disposable bags for a sturdier option you can pack up each morning. You can even purchase items like cloth napkins, beeswax wrap, and reusable sandwich bags. Check out more tips in our previous post on how to pack a sustainable lunch.

4. Take a Walk

If you can manage it, skip the drive and use your own two feet to get to your destination. You’ll lower your carbon footprint while getting a breath of fresh air, and we recommend you make it more fun by traveling with a friend. (If you have little ones, organize a group of students and parents.) If you want to take it to the next level, you can even bring a bag with you to pick up litter when you see it.
