Announcing Our Statewide Litter Awareness Campaign
Have you ever considered the harmful effects litter can have on our environment? Yesterday, we unveiled our new statewide public service campaign at the Georgia State Capitol, and we’re thrilled to share it with all of you today. Keep reading to discover the details and see how you can get involved.
Campaign Basics
We’re committed to making Georgia a cleaner, greener, more beautiful place to live, and ending litter is one of our primary initiatives, alongside reducing waste, promoting recycling, and beautifying communities. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, litter costs the state $10 million per year in cleanup efforts, not including the costs incurred on the local level by cities and counties. Litter has a negative impact on economic development, health, and safety across Georgia, and it also harms wildlife and the environment. Our customizable campaign slogan, “Consider _______ before you litter”, and hashtag, #reconsiderlitter, ask the public to contemplate these effects and join the fight to reverse them.
How You Can Get Involved
We’re excited to provide resources for every day actions you can take to help reduce—and ultimately eliminate—litter in Georgia. Below are some ways to get started.
Sign Our Pledge
Take our pledge right here on our website and join other Georgians committed to our cause. Don’t forget to ask your friends, family, and colleagues to join you!
Share Our Materials
In February, we’ll begin releasing visual components of our campaign. You’ll see posters and other imagery around your city or town, and we’ll also share facts, community perspectives, and ways to engage on this blog and sites like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. We encourage you to share these freely when you see them.
Connect with Your Community
We lead a network of more than 70 city and county and affiliates across the state in environmental preservation efforts. (Fun fact: this past year, we collected over 2 million pounds of litter, cleaning 30,795 miles of public land and 931 miles of rivers, lakes, shores, and wetlands.) We are promoting this campaign in partnership with them, and there will be numerous opportunities for you to attend related events and programs right in your own neighborhood.
We’re excited to move forward on this journey with you! Thank you for helping us create a cleaner, greener, more beautiful Georgia.
