16 Ways to Enjoy the Outdoors This Summer
Summer might look a little different this year, but just because you’re social distancing doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of the season! It’s the perfect time to reconnect with nature, whether you stay in your own backyard or finally explore that park you’ve always wanted to visit. Read our tips below to discover how you can safely celebrate Georgia’s beautiful weather.
1. Take a hike. From Appalachian summits to coastal grasslands, from canyons to impressive waterfalls, Georgia offers wildly diverse landscapes. Enjoy an old favorite or pick a new trail to traverse—just make sure to check online before you go for updated hours and safety guidelines.
2. Explore your own neighborhood. You might even discover a stream or pocket park you never knew existed.
3. Plant pollinator-friendly flowers. We’re particularly fond of milkweed, bee balm, zinnias, and coneflowers.
4. Pack a picnic. There’s no better time than the present to spend a few luxurious hours outside with family and a basket of your favorite cuisine! If you’re like us, you might have even cooked up a few new recipes during this extra time at home.
5. Find your inner zen. Take those downward facing dogs and sun salutations outdoors. You can practice solo, or find a studio that offers classes at a nearby park.
6. Go stargazing—after all, our skies are clearer than ever these days!
7. Catch a beautiful sunset (or sunrise, if you’re a morning person).
8. Head for the woods for a night or two! Whether you backpack in or set up near your car, going camping is a lovely way to satisfy your wanderlust.
9. Croquet, anyone? Cornhole? Purchase a few yard games if you haven’t already and have a ton of fun right at home.
10. Take up bird watching. Put seeds and water out, and they’ll come right to you!
11. Build something. This is the summer to finally piece together that birdhouse or bee hotel. You can even make these items with materials you already have lying around.
12. Go for a plog. Technically, this means picking up litter while jogging, but it’s also a great activity to do while you walk. Go solo or with a member of your household, and just remember to wear gloves or use a litter picker for safety (and wash your hands thoroughly afterward).
13. Get out on the water! We don’t recommend visiting highly populated areas, but if you plan correctly, you might be able to enjoy a socially distanced swim, and you can always spread out in a kayak or canoe. Kiddie pools and sprinklers are also perfect for cooling off at home.
14. Go for a bike ride. Taking a spin on two wheels is another great way to get fresh air and exercise. As with all activities on this list, just remember to follow local safety guidelines.
15. Grab a blanket or hammock and read a book outside. Netflix and Hulu aren’t the only places to catch a good story!
16. Get creative…literally. Try your hand at leaf or bark rubbings, write a nature poem, or paint (or take) a picture of an animal or plant. You can even leave a fun chalk message on the sidewalk for your neighbors.
Now get out there and enjoy the beautiful day!
